tryUpdateDocValue is overwritten by an earlier, still-buffered doc-values update
Finding LFV-009Area: index / doc-values updatesPriority: mediumImpact: data corruptionNovelty: new
AI-assisted finding, confirmed by automated checks, not yet triaged by a human Lucene committer. This site files nothing upstream.
What it shows
You update a doc-values field by term and, before that buffered update is resolved, call tryUpdateDocValue on the same document. You expect the later tryUpdateDocValue to win, as sequence numbers say. Instead it is applied in place with the next delete generation, the earlier term update resolves later and wins, and the wrong value (or a lost un-delete) is durable.
The test shows that IndexWriter#tryUpdateDocValue (n=3) on a document that has an earlier, still-buffered updateNumericDocValue by term (n=2) succeeds, but the earlier update wins.
Expected vs actual
Expected the next NRT reader to show the later value n=3; actual: the earlier n=2 (expected:<3> but was:<2>), with -ea and -da.

Run it
- Tested on Lucene main e1faeba08bde (2026-11-02): still reproduces.
- Tested on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20 (2026-10-28): reproduced.
- Recorded outcome of run 1 on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20: 1 test(s) run, 1 failed.
- How to read the outcome: a failing test is the finding reproducing (the failure message states expected against actual).
- Seeds: a rerun with the same seed replays the same random choices. Assertions off (-da -dsa -Dtests.asserts=false) is the production-like setting.

Gradle alternative: copy the test into the matching module's src/test/ tree of the checkout and run ./gradlew -p lucene/<module> test --tests <class> -Ptests.seed=<seed> (add -Ptests.asserts=false for a run without assertions).
