Flexible StandardQueryParser misses -0.0 documents for exclusive float/double bounds
Finding LFV-059Area: queryparser / flexiblePriority: lowImpact: silent wrong resultsNovelty: new
AI-assisted finding, confirmed by automated checks, not yet triaged by a human Lucene committer. This site files nothing upstream.
What it shows
With the flexible StandardQueryParser and a Float/Double PointsConfig, you query x:[* TO 0} on an index that holds -0.0. You expect every document to match exactly one of x < 0 and x >= 0. Instead the parser uses Math.nextUp/nextDown for exclusive bounds, so x:[* TO 0} misses -0.0 documents and such a document matches neither x < 0 nor x >= 0.
The test shows that the flexible StandardQueryParser's f:[* TO 0} ("f < 0") on a Float points field does not match a document indexed with -0f.
Expected vs actual
Expected: 1 hit, since FloatPoint ranges follow Float.compareTo (-0f < 0f). Actual (-ea and -da): 0 hits; the parsed query is f:[-Infinity TO -1.4E-45] (Math.nextDown(0f)).

Run it
- Tested on Lucene main e1faeba08bde (2026-11-02): still reproduces.
- Tested on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20 (2026-10-28): reproduced.
- Recorded outcome of run 1 on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20: 1 test(s) run, 1 failed.
- How to read the outcome: a failing test is the finding reproducing (the failure message states expected against actual).
- Seeds: a rerun with the same seed replays the same random choices. Assertions off (-da -dsa -Dtests.asserts=false) is the production-like setting.

The module(s) facet also need their third-party runtime jars; ./gradlew -p lucene/<module> dependencies lists them.
Gradle alternative: copy the test into the matching module's src/test/ tree of the checkout and run ./gradlew -p lucene/<module> test --tests <class> -Ptests.seed=<seed> (add -Ptests.asserts=false for a run without assertions).
