BytesRefHash accepts initial capacity 1 but never grows the table, so add() or find() of any second distinct key spins forever; since 10.3.0 the same capacity also stores a key whose hashcode is -1 as an empty slot

Finding LFV-422Area: util / BytesRefHash (initial capacity 1: rehash trigger, linear probe and slot word)Priority: lowImpact: hangNovelty: known outside Lucene

AI-assisted finding, confirmed by automated checks, not yet triaged by a human Lucene committer. This site files nothing upstream.

What it shows

You create new BytesRefHash(pool, 1, new BytesRefHash.DirectBytesStartArray(1)), which the constructor accepts because it rejects only capacities <= 0 and non-powers of two, add the key 'a', then add or look up 'b', expecting id 1 or -1 at once, as with capacity 2. Instead the call never returns: with one slot, hashHalfSize is 0, so add()'s rehash trigger 'count == hashHalfSize' never fires, the single slot stays full, and the linear probe in findHash loops forever looking for an empty slot. Since 10.3.0 (#14720) the same capacity also stores a key whose seeded murmur3 hashcode is exactly -1 as the EMPTY marker, so find() returns -1 for a key that was just added and adding it again gives it a second id.

# Lucene checkout at the tested commit, built with: ./gradlew --no-daemon assemble (JDK 25)

CP=$CP:junit-platform-console-standalone-6.1.3.jar # JUnit Platform console launcher (Maven Central)

javac -d classes -cp "$CP" $(find src -name '*.java')

# run 1: assertions on, seed DEADBEEF
java -ea -esa --add-modules jdk.incubator.vector --enable-native-access=ALL-UNNAMED -Dtests.seed=DEADBEEF \
     -cp "classes:$CP" org.junit.platform.console.ConsoleLauncher \
     execute --select-class org.apache.lucene.util.TestBytesRefHashCapacityOne

Gradle alternative: copy the test into the matching module's src/test/ tree of the checkout and run ./gradlew -p lucene/<module> test --tests <class> -Ptests.seed=<seed> (add -Ptests.asserts=false for a run without assertions).
