FreeTextSuggester.build accepts a token that contains the separator byte whenever the shingled term stays within the gram limit, although its javadoc promises an IllegalArgumentException; later lookups whose last complete word occurs only inside that token throw AssertionError (-ea) or NullPointerException (-da)
Finding LFV-600Area: suggest / FreeTextSuggester (n-gram model joined with an in-band separator byte; build-side separator check)Priority: lowImpact: wrong errorNovelty: new
AI-assisted finding, confirmed by automated checks, not yet triaged by a human Lucene committer. This site files nothing upstream.
What it shows
You build a FreeTextSuggester with the default bigram model and separator U+001E over the single entry 'foo\u001ebar' (the upstream test input 'foo\u001ebar baz' without its neighbour 'baz'), using an analyzer that keeps it as one token such as UnicodeWhitespaceAnalyzer, and expect build() to throw IllegalArgumentException, as the constructor javadoc promises and as it does for 'foo\u001ebar baz'. Instead build() succeeds, because it only rejects an indexed shingle whose separator count implies more than grams words, so the token is stored as if it were the bigram (foo, bar) with no unigram 'foo'. A later lookup('foo ') then fails inside the suggester with AssertionError at FreeTextSuggester.java:576 (-ea) or NullPointerException in decodeWeight (-da), and lookup('f') returns the token itself with a wrong score.
The test shows that FreeTextSuggester.build (default bigram model, separator U+001E, KeywordAnalyzer) accepts the single entry "foo\u001ebar", whose only token contains the separator byte.
Expected vs actual
Expected (constructor javadoc): IllegalArgumentException. Actual: build() succeeds (Expected exception IllegalArgumentException but no exception was thrown).

Run it
- Tested on Lucene main e1faeba08bde (2026-11-02): still reproduces.
- Tested on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20 (2026-10-28): reproduced.
- Recorded outcome of run 1 on Lucene main 645d4fe14a20: 1 test(s) run, 1 failed.
- How to read the outcome: a failing test is the finding reproducing (the failure message states expected against actual).
- Seeds: a rerun with the same seed replays the same random choices. Assertions off (-da -dsa -Dtests.asserts=false) is the production-like setting.
